Report on the four Plate Finals held over the last two weekends
March 13th
U13 Plate Final Loughborough 34 Oakham 29
The first game of the morning saw a last gasp try and conversion for Loughborough to just pip a courageous Oakham. Oakham, having come back from behind all game to nudge in front for the first time late in the game with just a few minutes remaining could not deny a well drilled Loughborough Side.
Under 15 Plate Final Leicester Forest 0 Ashby 29
The second game saw another fiercely contested encounter with no quarter given by either side. Ashby had the edge on the day with some very strong performances but a spirited LFE threw their bodies into every challenge and only valiant Ashby defence saw them remain scoreless.
March 20th
Under 14 Hinckley 20 v Lutterworth 27
In context with the action the previous week this ended up being a tight affair with Lutterworth storming out the blocks to go three tries up in the first 20 minutes. Hinckley never let their heads drop and came back strongly in the second half getting within one score but Lutterworth held their nerve to close the game out.
Under 16 Market Bosworth 10 v Melton 12
These teams drew earlier in the season and they were closely matched throughout which produced a nail biting final for all watching.
The first half saw Market Bosworth score two unanswered tries, coupled with some heroic defending they deserved to go in to half time ahead. Melton were nothing if not determined and half way through the first half crashed over for a well deserved try. In such a close game the next try would decide the outcome and Melton left it very late to go over leaving a kick form a tricky angle to decide the match. A successful kick was greeted by the loudest cheer of weekend and sealed a memorable victory to Melton to round off four excellent plate finals.
Excellent sportsmanship throughout from all eight teams which made for a very enjoyable two days showcasing all thats great about our sport.
Thanks to all the volunteers at Melton Mowbray RFC for hosting the two plate finals weekends.
